Treatment Modalities

Please see below for more information about the evidence-based therapeutic approaches that I use and list of conditions that I treat.

CBT
Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment that is scientifically studied and effective in treating a variety of concerns including: depression, anxiety disorders, phobias, OCD, PTSD, insomnia, and more. CBT is focused on the present and is goal-oriented and teaches skills to help you to change problematic thinking patterns, shift behavior, and react to your emotions differently. Individuals in CBT meet weekly and often have assignments to complete between sessions so that skills and strategies can be learned more readily.

DBT
Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an effective skills-based treatment for adults, adolescents and children who experience intense and overwhelming emotions, relationship difficulties, impulsive behavior, suicidal thinking and self-harm. DBT is a treatment that teaches skills designed to tolerate distressing situations, understand and change emotions, stay in the present moment, improve relationships and self-respect, and change unhelpful behavior. DBT is a comprehensive treatment and includes weekly individual DBT therapy, weekly DBT skills group, phone coaching (the ability to contact your therapist between sessions), and therapist attendance of a DBT consultation team. Adolescents in DBT participate in the skills group with one or more caregivers. For children, DBT is completed together as a family (no group component).

**I provide comprehensive DBT (individual therapy, phone coaching, consultation team). At this time, I do not provide DBT skills groups and will refer to another provider or practice for this component of the treatment**

Mindfulness
Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Mindfulness refers to nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment. Mindfulness is a skill designed to increase awareness and tolerance of thoughts, feelings, sensations and urges so that we can choose whether or not to act on them. Mindfulness-based treatments (such as Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) provide us with more choices on how to think, feel and react and trains our minds to be more aware of the present moment, allowing for reduced distress/rumination and increased opportunities for joy. Acceptance based approaches (such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) are focused on reducing suffering through embracing difficult thoughts, feelings and realities and accepting facts that cannot be changed. They focus on increasing flexibility in thinking, acting based on values, and reducing avoidance of the here and now.
